The Eritrean Coup That Never Was

At 6AM EST Monday, January 21st, 2013, many Eritreans around the world became the victims of rumors and anti-Eritrean propaganda that spread through both social media and print media. The rumor was that a coup was taking place in Eritrea. It was later shown to be false. This is not the first time that Eritreans have witnessed such ridiculous claims that have spread across the internet like wild fire and I doubt that this will be the last. The purpose of the PDF article linked below is to analyze how this rumor became started, understand the direct and indirect forces that spread and perpetuated it, and recognize future methods of preventing and mitigating the effects of similar propaganda against the state and people of Eritrea. Because many pictures are included in the PDF, I have chosen to use an outline format followed by more standard free form text in the conclusion.

  1. One of the most sadest thing I heard from Aljezira tv was a drama of defaming the beloved nation by inviting the so called scholars from us and Europe who don’t have the slightest facts about Eritrea. I was in Asmara while the news was fabricated and also failed. We the people in Asmara didn’t see or hear anything except that things were going as smooth as any day in Eritrea. People started to laugh at Aljezira and also said well this one thing they learned how much Chios can be created in any place in the world. We Eritreans do know very well how much the media wants to manipulate if there is anyone who can believe them. Deki Ere, stay tune.

  3. Appreciate the effort and time you took to do the research. Will forward this to friends and hope for a more nuanced discussion among people that are interested and involved in this subject.

  4. Simon, I saluted you for amazing work you did, this is what we need to educated our self in order to defend our self from our sworn enemies. Keep up exposing the evils.

  5. Excellent work !
We live in a time of engineered reality, same as genetically modifying foods, news are nowadays modified to fit, trading, interfere in government affairs, change elections. We are living in very exciting and dangerous times. The solid line between reality and imagination has faded. Welcome to the new world order, where news is not what is happening but what is planned to be happening….

  6. Well done Simon! Ýou are one of the real Warsays who wouldn’t betray the promises that our beloved martyrs laid on us Eritreans. I am really proud of you! Having warsays like you no one with how much lies in his baggabe would be able to distabilize our beloved Eritrea the land handed to us by our martyrs.Keep it up.

  7. Absolutely fantastic work Simon. Your brilliant work is the perfect illustration and just goes to show, how this ‘individuals’ devoid of any moral compass and integrity are willing to distort facts and fabricate non existing ‘stories’ in the hope of bringing chaos and instabilities. Thank you for your service to your People and Country.

We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Government.

    Long live Eritrea.

  8. Thank you for all your kind words. I really appreciate it. This is nothing compared to those that came before us. My hope is that we do even more to fight the forces that conspire against us. Thanks again.

  9. An excellent job Simon. Eritrea has more citizens that love it than those animals like so called Meron from Paris. I would advise Meron to read the accurate history of the SHAEBIA. This strong and hard working and visionary leadership has survived many trying times including the 6th Dergue offensive and the 3rd woyane offensive all without any outside help. Yes, many traitors have betrayed the leadership just like Meron from Paris and others from Addis abbaba. Wedi Afom is a visionary leader and nothing will change that fact. Long live the Hizbawi Ghinbar and Awet Nehafash!!!

  10. Simon,
Many thanks for exposing their evil agenda against our beloved country and people. From you analysis one can see very easily their amateurish trick. Very good job keep up!

  12. I Think that the notion of some one just waking up one morning and to start a rumor such as this is wrong. Now that he story is unfolding their is no denying that an incident had taken place at MOI on January 21. As the Government admits here on the third paragraph……you have done a great job of investigating how a rumor could start with out a single mention of this incident. I think you have great investigative abilities and i think you could help the eritrean community shed a light on what exactly took place at MOI on January 21
